These dreamy bedroom designs are what dreams are made of. When it comes to residential interiors, the bedroom serves as a private sanctuary—a space to unwind—offering designers an opportunity to get creative and, at times, even stray from a home’s overall aesthetic. From whimsical accents to luxe finishes and textures, these relaxing bedroom design ideas balance form and function.

Editor’s note: This article was updated in August, 2023 to reflect an updated selection of dreamy bedroom design ideas.

Unwind in Dreamy Bedroom Designs Around the Globe

1. This Dallas Apartment Features a Must-See Bedroom Design

A white bed in a room with wood paneled walls and wood ceiling

Four years ago, Liz and Bill Armstrong acquired a full floor of Museum Tower, a 42-story oval building designed by Johnson Fain in the heart of Dallas’s arts district. The couple had children and a growing squadron of grandchildren, but most of the time it was just the pair of them living in the 9,000-square-foot apartment containing two separate elevators bays, two home offices, and 360-degrees views. For the interior design of the main bedroom, black-walnut paneling hosts a Markus Linnenbrink epoxy resin on wood. Read more about this dreamy bedroom.

2. RDK Design Updates a Chicago High-Rise Apartment

A light blue bed near an open shelving unit with colorful shoes

Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood is known for its historic mansions. But it’s also home to some stellar modernist high-rises. RDK Design’s clients—a lawyer and a doctor with college-age children—live in just such a tower. They asked the firm to freshen up their 3,300-square-foot apartment so it better matched the building, adding a children’s bedroom in shades of blue. Read more about this children’s bedroom design.

3. Art Group Thinks Globally for a Moscow Apartment

A gray bed in a room with exposed brick and an ornate red rug

For a couple who wanted to turn their 3,200-square-foot Moscow town house into a gathering place for children and grandchildren, each generation needed their space. While the couple wanted the space to be family-friendly, they weren’t interested in a conservative aesthetic. Even the guest bedroom was carefully designed—a glass headboard backdrops a Devina Nais bed. Read more about this sophisticated bedroom decor.

4. This Bedroom Design Blends Beachy Cool and Low-Key Luxe

A white bed with minimalist room decor

When real estate brokers extol the virtues of location, location, location, they’re rarely lucky enough to be referencing a locale as postcard-perfect as Florida’s Fisher Island. In short, Fisher Island is no place to gild the lily—which was exactly designer Sam Robin’s approach to a recent project there. For the guest room, a Paolo Rizzatto wall sconce and textiles from House of Cindy add graphic magnetism. Read more about this penthouse design.

5. Inside a Minimalist Brooklyn Townhouse

A mattress on the floor with white walls

What happens when two of New York’s most promising product designers style a pristine Brooklyn townhouse? That’s what local construction company Hatchet Design Build, known for their restorations, sought to answer when they tapped Coil + Drift’s John Sorensen-Jolink and Cold Picnic co-founder Phoebe Sung to rethink the interiors of a property on St. Johns Place for a shoot with photographer Nicholas Calcott. The main bedroom decor features caned and curved walnut headboard. Read more about this dreamy bedroom design.

6. Explore an Ornate Holiday Home in Naples, Florida With Beach Vibes

A master bedroom designed with blue and white colors to emulate luxury

A philanthropic couple was looking for a Florida holiday home that would eventually become their permanent residence. They found it in a house with a breathtaking view of the Intracoastal Waterway. Scratch that: The location was perfect; the early 2000’s house was not, nor did it capitalize on its vista. The ornate, Old World Mediterranean–style home with dark stucco walls and a compartmentalized floor plan would have to be completely transformed. For the guest bedroom, blue is the color of choice. Read more about the beach decor in this home.

7. Elements of Surprise Define a Dreamy Manhattan Aerie by Dufner Heighes

A dreamy bedroom with a white bed and watercolor-like wallcoverings

“I have an ops brain,” Erica Holborn says, referring to her propensity toward streamlined operations. That’s true at the office—she is the president of SANDOW, Interior Design’s parent company—and at home in her one-bedroom apartment high up on Sutton Place designed by Dufner Heighes. In the main bedroom, acacia wood and antiqued brass furnishings add visual interest. Read more about this striking one-bedroom apartment design.

8. A Former School With a Historical Past Transforms into Chic Condos

A gray bed in a room with white walls

One of New York’s oldest Federal-style buildings, an official city landmark that dates to 1826, is the former parish parochial school and convent. Nevertheless, enrollment dwindled over the decades, eventually leading the archdiocese to sell the property for over $30 million to Hamlin Ventures and Time Equities. They hired Marvel Architects, for an expansion and a conversion into the Residences at Prince, and Juliet Gold Design, for the model apartment. Original roof timbers in a bedroom were fireproofed and faux-painted. Every detail of this dreamy bedroom whispers elegance and comfort Read more about this restored residential building.

9. Mark English Architects Updates a 1917 San Francisco Residence

A white bed beneath a row of rectangular windows

Female architects were very rare when Elizabeth Austin completed a San Francisco home in 1917. A century later, Mark English Architects was charged with updating the single-famly residence. “We felt honored to be tasked with protecting her vision, while at the same time adapting it to a new century of life,” principal Mark English says. Leather flooring sits beneath the airy, light-filled main bedroom. Read more about this bedroom design.

10. Andre Kikoski Reorients NYC Apartment to Showcase Panoramic Views

A dreamy bedroom with city views

When architect Andre Kikoski’s client bought this 32nd-floor apartment it was oriented inwards, its too-good-to-be-true panoramic skyline views, which included the Empire State building, obscured by poorly placed millwork and air conditioning units. Kikoski was brought in to save his client’s investment by capitalizing on the views within a modest budget. Using a few simple but powerful architectural moves, he reorganized the awkward plan to showcase the cityscape. In the main bedroom, European oak planks cover the floors. Read more about bedroom design.

11. MarkZeff Masterminds a New York Pied-à-Terre With a Dreamy Bedroom

A gray bed with a red accent pillow in a city apartment

Mark Zeff has met his match. The Interior Design Hall of Fame member is, in a word, decisive: a creative who makes up his mind lickety-split and likes to keep things moving forward. As it turned out, so was the Miami-based client who hired Zeff to design her New York pied-à-terre. The bedroom interior design boasts a channel-tufted velvet platform bed, a lacquered Regency-style desk, and a bamboo-silk rug. Read more about this apartment design.

12. This Island Home Features Beachy Bedroom Decor

A dreamy bedroom with a blue bed and wood beams

For a jet-setting couple, Cameron Stewart principal Cameron Schwabenton, in collaboration with Simons Young Architects and Cook Bonner Construction, had mere months to complete the entire home design process and delivery—without ever meeting them face-to-face. Schwabenton finished the three bedrooms and three and a half baths in an easy-breezy mix of reclaimed-beam ceilings and comfy custom seating. For the main bedroom, a signed Ed Ruscha painting the owners purchased together is a focal point. Read more about this home design.

13. Ontario Home by Williamson Williamson Is Open in All Senses

A bed near an expansive window with forest views

For a doctor and his aging parents, a new home was in order, designed by Betsy and Shane Williamson of the firm Williamson Williamson. For the exterior, they selected cedar, echoing the cedar trees that grow there, plus slabs of limestone from a local quarry. Between the slabs, the horizontal joints are raked deep, a detail inspired by the brickwork of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House in Buffalo. The main bedroom is part of a suite that also boasts a den and a library. Read more about this home design.

14. An Asbury Park Penthouse Addition With a Chic Bedroom Design

A dreamy bedroom with pink floral artwork and a rocking chair

IStar began their 10-year, multi-billion-dollar plan to revitalize New Jersey’s Asbury Park last summer with the launch the Asbury—the first hotel to open there in over 50 years. Now comes the Monroe, a 34-unit condo by Oppenheim Architecture with a penthouse designed by Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture and Design and Interior Design Hall of Fame member Anda Andrei. In a new penthouse, the bedroom has a bleached oak bed and floors. Read more about this design.

15. Tihany Design Completes First Residential Project in 25 Years in Dubai

A chic bedroom design with wood paneled walls and a pink carpet

A gleaming contemporary villa, surrounding a lush lawn with a shimmering swimming pool, would undoubtedly be right at home in parts of Miami or Los Angeles. However, this is Dubai. Sure, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates has the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, but a house of this sort seems quite another story. Interior Design Hall of Fame member Adam Tihany confirms our assessment. Red-gum paneling backs the main bedroom’s custom headboard, combining polyester-viscose and leather. Read more about this bedroom design.

Wood Melbourne Brings Postmodern Pop to the Bathroom

Olive-tinged Dirty Martini pairs especially well with retro-pink Boiled Prawn—which is the entire point of Chromablock, Aussie bath fitting brand Wood Melbourne’s evocatively hued (and titled) resin faucet handles. The collection’s 12 shades and two shapes—cubical Corbu and cylindrical Kahn—are designed to comingle on sinks, tubs, and showers. The mix-or-match taps are the brainchild of New York–based, New Zealand–bred Georgina McWhirter, a lover of slightly warped color combos and (did we mention?!) an Interior Design editor whose influences range from William Eggleston photography to the Memphis Group to grunge makeup artistry. “I see makeup as akin to art supplies,” she explains, “and my imagination is sparked by Lisa Eldridge’s brilliantly formulated lipstick hues and MAC’s Terry Barber, famous for his subversive eyes.”

Efforts to makeover her rental apartment’s blah bath inspired McWhirter to prototype colorful faucet handles using nail polish (natch) on wood shapes—yielding plaudits from houseguests and the encouragement to approach Wood Melbourne founder Oliver MacLatchy, an artisan unafraid of bringing unexpected materials to wet zones (think timber tub spouts and terrazzo lav sets). After a protracted R&D phase involving buildout of a temperature-controlled production space (“resin is incredibly finicky, even one or two degrees will make or break a mix” notes MacLatchy), and countless pigment test blends, graphically charged Chromablock is now available globally by custom order.

Pair the shapely geometric handles with any of the company’s faucets and backplates, or mount flush to the sink or wall. The dozen hues range from the palest shade, buttercream yellow Crème Brulee, to deep gray Footpath (the Antipodean term for pavement). Rounding out the mix is orange-red Hot Sauce, mustard Fetid, pale lilac Fervid, blue-gray Inclement, green-around-the-gills Pistachio, terracotta Burnt Clay, dirty pink Boiled Prawn, maroon Red Velvet, and ultramarine For Yves (after Klein, of course).

Caesarstone

Porcelain surface 505 Archetta offers the look of natural stone recreated in an on-trend off-white ivory base impressed/imprinted with flowing grey veining. A closer look reveals muted green and crystalline yellow tones, all chicly rendered in a honed finish. The best part? The slab is suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
