Roche Bobois‘ collaboration with Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos produced fun, softly shaped sofas, rugs, and cushions in a color palette inspired by the pastel houses in Lisbon’s Old Town. BomBom Outdoor has adjustable bolster cushions that can be arranged in any way desired atop the seat. The upholstery is a cozy quilted Méridien outdoor fabric in hues that are sugar sweet and reminiscent of licorice Allsorts. Vasconcelos says she is inspired by everyday life. “As a Portuguese woman, the savoir faire and materials specific to my culture are essential: the azulejos that adorn our indoor and outdoor spaces, along with the crochet doilies that decorate sofas, tables, and televisions in all Portuguese homes.” It’s that sense of play and whimsy that defines BomBom.

New York fashion brand Noah, from Brendon Babenzien and Estelle Bailey-Babenzien, makes men’s clothing that channels East Coast nautical style…think Martha’s Vineyard in the summer. It’s a timeless aesthetic that suggests a breezy life of outdoor leisure. That influence is apparent in the label’s five-part capsule collection, including Danish furniture maker Gubi’s MR01 outdoor lounge in four new Noah-curated colors: bold yellow and royal blue plus a more understated navy and gray. All pop on their own, but also play nice when deployed together—say, in a row poolside. The oiled solid-iroko base is strung with rope made from a high-performance waterproof polyester used in speed sailing, a material combo that’s perfect for alfresco applications. This Outdoor Lounger Takes Its Shape From a Surprising Source

Japanese industrial designer Kensaku Oshiro, an alum of Lissoni Associati and Barber Osgerby who founded his own Milan-based practice eight years ago, looked to an interesting inspiration source for Grapy: jute bags that farmers use as impromptu lounges during the workday. Despite its somewhat casual look, the beanbag-style outdoor seat is the byproduct of intensive research into ergonomics, softly supporting the body via polystyrene and foam padding. Grapy’s removable technical-fabric cover comes in Marquetry by Sunbrella or Meltemi Texture by Jover Decó, in five hues.

Molteni&C Makes a Splash With Debut Outdoor Furniture Collection

The Italian brand dives into outdoor furniture for the first time and it’s all about liminal space. “I was inspired by modernism to recall the permeability and transparency between indoors and out, and that intimate con­nection with light and nature,” Molteni&C creative director Vincent Van Duysen says of the collection, which en­com­passes vintage reissues alongside newer releases. From the early 1950’s are two pieces by Gio Ponti: a rigid poly­ure­thane rendition of his wraparound D.154.2 armchair that can be customized in myriad weatherproof polyester upholsteries, and his D.150.5 chaise longue, now produced in solid teak, its precise angles accurate to Ponti’s original drawings. Among the more recent is Arc Outdoor, a cement-finished version of the parabolic 2009 table by Foster + Partners, and the Palinfrasca armchair in supersized woven bands of teak or EVA polyurethane, an all-weather rein­vention of a 1994 Luca Meda design.

The sinuous seat, with a 25-degree angled back, is composed of 20 slender steel rods shaped and spaced for maximum comfort, along with a removable polyurethane pad. The frame can be specified in crisp Black or White or hues that will harmonize with both city and country landscapes: Ocean Blue, Moss Green, Olive Green, or Cement Gray. SLT (Studiolite) Uses Bright Colors and Lively Shapes for a Market in Wuhan, China

Headquartered in Shanghai with offices in both Hong Kong and Seattle, design firm SLT (Studiolite) is distinguishing themselves through a growing portfolio of thoughtful—yet playful—projects. For Holiland Market in Wuhan, China, SLT brought the energy of dining into the design of the space, a bakery shop with an open-air eating area. Bright colors and lively shapes dominate the 2,400-square-foot market. “We used three basic forms: circle, square, and triangle, to conceive and divide the internal and external space,” chief creator Chen Ling explains. The shapes of the market’s wares—especially baked cakes—helped define SLT’s interventions, from displays to outdoor seating. Alongside geometric shapes, the color palette—in cheerful blue, green, and orange—also helps to delineate zones. Custom touches are used throughout, including layered acrylic shelving. And in case the energy of a bustling market isn’t enough, SLT added a dynamic rotating screen on the ceiling for additional buzz.
