This Modular Sofa by Stefan Borselius Snakes Around Any Space

This year, a slinky, snaky form welcomes NeoCon-goers at the entry of the Scandinavian Spaces showroom on the 11th floor. It’s Spino by Stefan Borselius, a modular sofa system by Skandiform now available with a slimmer curve creating a rounded 90-degree corner. “Spino is growing and doesn’t want to be restricted,” Borselius says. The new pieces—still perched on a gravity-defying upside-down triangle base—have been adapted so that they can be positioned back-to-back or eye-to-eye or other configurations. The modules can take wider turns across the room, accommodate sharp corners, make tight U-turns in compact spaces, or line up straight as an arrow. Through Scandinavian Spaces.

Delavegacanolasso for Tini Devises a Modular Showcase Garage for a Madrid Home

60 days. That’s the length of time Madrid-based modular home company Tini promises construction and installation of its units, which are designed by Ignacio de la Vega and Pilar Cano-Lasso, both also of architecture firm Delavegacanolasso. That estimate includes customization, and although there are two standard sizes for Tini modules—253 and 366 square feet—many clients combine them to meet their specific spatial needs.

For a Madrid residence, two units were joined to create a 560-square-foot showcase garage for the family’s 1948 Porsche 356 and 1959 Austin Healey 3000. The architects customized the modules to accommodate six lindens on the verdant site. “We adapted the width and length of both structures, so we had no need to touch the trees,” de la Vega explains. “As a result, from the first day the pavilion looked as if it had been there for years, totally integrated in the garden.”

The pavilion’s frame is weathering steel, while the 29.5-foot-long facade is composed of a trio of manually operated sliding doors with vertically oriented 2 ¾-inch-wide pine slats that allow light and air into the space. Interior plywood boards were painted a dramatic matte black to highlight the vintage cars, while the floor is a treated prefab concrete slab. The architects set down a pair of black Barcelona chairs and a custom pine side table to create a lounge area within the pavilion. Though less than 200 feet from the main residence, the garage feels light-years away.

Dedalèo Cofounders Reimagine the Kitchen With Tubular-Steel Modules

Ntaiana Charalampous, Antonia Stylianou, and Nayia Vasileiadou are the female cofounders of Dedalèo, the young Cypriot studio that recently took Milan’s Isola Design District by storm. Their Ilo+Milo reimagines the kitchen as modernist tubular-steel modules that, like furniture, can be re-arranged and added to at any given time. U- or L-shape or galley configurations are all within reach, but the core of the system revolves around an island composed of seven freestanding elements, including semicircular tables at either end that can be moved to form a round freestanding table (so clever!). Fronts are made of plain, perforated, or corrugated steel or aluminum sheets that can be replaced and recycled with ease. The countertop, which is removable, can be specified as a stainless-steel sheet or a slab of gray terrazzo flecked with scrap aluminum, glass, and marble.

Martina Guandalini’s Latest Modular Form Offers a Nod to New Beginnings

Acknowledging the shock and disruption of the pandemic, Italy-born, New York–based designer, architect, and creative director Martina Guandalini was determined to emerge with a new beginning. Digging deep into “the most spiritual part of myself,” she says, thoughts centered on ideas of infinity. Ergo, the product with the same name was born. Suitable as a table or seat, Infinity is based on a modular structure of marble and resin. Combination possibilities, if not quite infinite, are definitely myriad.

Roche Bobois Celebrates 50 Years With Reimagined Mah Jong Lounge

It’s official: 50 years have passed since designer Hans Hopfer and Roche Bobois cofounder Philippe Roche joined forces to yield one of the French brand’s bestselling pieces, Mah Jong. The mix-and-match modular lounge resembles its namesake, the ever-popular Chinese game played with 144 colorful tiles. To celebrate the icon’s anniversary, the company reimagines the low-slung, sprawling sectional with new additions: a base that gives the cushions the appearance that they are floating, and integrated cocktail tables. Finishes—solid-ash veneer or high-gloss lacquer—are hand-applied. The stitched upholstery is also newly available in a trio of fresh colorways by the late fashion designer Kenzo Takado, founder of famed label Kenzo. There’s Umi (Japanese for sea), in an appropriate mix of blue and green; Irun (rest), which combines earth tones with blue; and Natsu (summer), in fuchsia, yellow, and red. Also on offer is a new line of outdoor-ready anniversary fabrics by another fabled fashion house, Missoni.
